A gift is something that brings joy, pleasure, and happiness. Usually a gift is appreciated by the recipient. The gift is protected and given special attention.

Explanation

Read Psalm 127:3 – “Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him” (NIV) Children are a blessing and not a curse. They are to be seen and heard. Though sometimes they may bring disappointment and sorrow, it is not to compare with the laughter and joy they bring to the home. Unfortunately, many of our children feel they are in the way of the parents and see themselves as an inconvenience. They never do anything right. They are always talking back. Sometimes parents say harsh things to the child like “I wish you were never born.”

Application

A child is a gift from God. It is expected of God that we nurture our children, protect them, give them special attention, and make them feel appreciated. Not only are we to give, but if we do as God expects, our children will bring us special joy, pleasure, and happiness that no material thing can do.

Conclusion

Let us take the pleasure with the disappointments. Count your blessings and see how the joy children bring far outweighs the disappointments.

Singled Out

Introduction

Have you ever been singled out among a group? You tried to dodge eye contact. You lowered your head as a hint that you didn’t want to be chosen. You knew it was coming. Your name was called. You asked yourself, “Why am I always chosen to participate in the “challenging” projects? There are thousands of others who can do just as good a job as me.” Though you think many others can do what you do, you have been singled out. You have been called.

Explanation

Read 2 Thessalonians 2:14, 15 – “He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.” (NIV) We have all been called to be children of God not just so we can go to heaven. God wants us to share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ right now.

What does it mean to share in the glory of Christ?
1. Jesus was glorified in death for though He did not sin, He died for our sins. We must share in the death of Jesus. It is God’s desire that we surrender our all to His Holy Spirit by putting to death our selfish ways.
a. Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Me will find it.” (Matthew 16:24,25, NIV)
2. Jesus was glorified in His resurrection. Jesus humbled Himself and was obedient to death on the cross. God raised Jesus from the dead and “exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name.” (Philippians 2:9, NIV) When we humble ourselves putting to death our selfish ways, God will exalt us just as He did Jesus.
a. The Word says, ‘Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.” (1 Peter 5:6, NIV)

Application

Yes. We are singled out for a reason. We are called to share in the glory of Christ.
Yes. We get tired of being singled out all the time.
We have been called. “…stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you…”

Conclusion

Though we are singled out, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9, NIV) Accept your call. Do your best for to the glory of God.

How Did He Know?

Introduction

If someone gave you one wish with a guarantee to fulfill it, what would you ask for? Would you ask for power, popularity, and prestige? Would you ask for riches beyond imagination? Would you ask from long life? How would you know what to ask for?

Explanation

Read 1 King 3:5,9 – “…God said, ‘Ask for whatever you want Me to give you. …So give Your servant a discerning heart to govern Your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.’ (NIV) Solomon had an opportunity to ask God for anything in the world, but all Solomon wanted was wisdom so he could please God who called him to be king.

Solomon, the author of many proverbs, wrote “When I was a boy in my father’s house, still tender, and an only child of my mother, he taught me and said, ‘Lay hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands and you will live. Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.’” (Proverbs 4:3-7, NIV)

How did Solomon know to ask God for wisdom? He was taught such from his father while he was young. Solomon wrote the words of his father upon his heart. As a result, he received wisdom from God and much, much more. He received riches, honor, and long life.

Application

What is wisdom? Wisdom is the ability to know what is best and the willingness to do it.

Unfortunately, we impart little knowledge to our children. Therefore, when faced with tough decisions, they make the wrong ones. It only takes a few minutes to discuss the destructiveness of drugs, alcohol, and pre-marital sex and the significance of purity and a good education.

Sometimes we don’t feel fit to impart knowledge because of our past. That is not good enough. We should do our part and pray unto God that our children will put it into practice.

Conclusion

Solomon took the knowledge he received from his father and put it into practice. As a result, there existed no king like Solomon. Parents, let us give our children the knowledge they need to survive this corrupt society. Then trust in God that they will act upon it when faced with tough decisions.

Series of Unfortunate Events

Introduction - Have you ever studied hard for a test but still failed or almost failed? Have you ever tried to save up some money for something special but when the time came to buy the something special, you had no money? Have you ever tried hard to win favor with someone and found yourself with no friends at all? Have you ever been hungry, ate some food, but was still hungry? Have you ever wore a big coat in the wintertime but were still cold? There may be something going on in your life that you are not aware of that may be causing these and other unfortunate events.

Explanation - Read Haggai 1:4, 5 - "Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin? Give careful thought to your ways.” (NIV) When the children of Israel returned home from Babylon, the building of God’s temple was put on hold for a very long time. It wasn’t time yet. This did not please God at all. After all God had done for the children of Israel, the nerve of them to go about and build their own homes but neglect the temple of God. As a result, everything the children of Israel tried to do was cursed. Nothing went right in the land until they changed their priorities.

Application - God no longer dwells in temples built by hands. He dwells in our hearts. We are the temple of God the Holy Spirit. Is your temple in ruin? Have you predetermined that it’s not time yet? Do you have better things to do? Are you spending more time watching TV than studying and meditating upon the Word of God? Are you spending more time grumbling and complaining than obeying the will of God? Is your temple, your heart, in ruins? The reason you may be experiencing a series of unfortunate events is that you have neglected the temple of the Holy Spirit. God is not going to bless you when your heart is all in ruin.

Conclusion – Change your priorities. "Seek first His kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well." (Matthew 6:33, NIV) Turn a series of unfortunate events into bountiful blessings.

Christian attributes manifested as signs of faith...Obedience

Introduction - We are all under some authority in this life. Now, whether we are submissive to that authority is another story. But isn’t it interesting that our natural tendency is to rebel though the rules and laws of the authority are for our own good?

Explanation - Read Phil 2:12 - "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." (NKJV) It is the will of God that we obey Him at all times and in all places. We sometimes want to be selective in our obedience, normally when it is convenient. But God says for us to obey and to do so with fear and trembling.

Application - We may ask, “Isn’t my attending Sunday worship enough? I don’t cuss, drink, or smoke. What more can I do?” The Lord says He'd rather have our obedience over any sacrifice we can give. "Then Samuel replied: ‘Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.’" (1 Samuel 15:22, NIV)

Conclusion - Fear God and keep His commandments. "Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man." (Ecclesiastes 12:13, NIV)

Christian attributes manifested as signs of faith...Persecuted

Introduction - We don’t like pain. We’d rather go an extra 100 miles to avoid pain than to go 2 miles and endure. We are pain averse. And we definitely don’t want to be picked on, talked about, or ridiculed. We want to be liked by everyone.

Explanation - Read II Timothy 3:10-12 - "But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra--what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution." (NKJV) If we are genuine Christians trying to live right, we are going to be disliked. People are going to hate us for no reason. It all comes with living a godly life.

Application - “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril or sword? Nay in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.” (Romans 8:35,37)

Conclusion - God has a reward for those who endure persecution in the present. "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." (Romans 8:18, NKJV)

Christian attributes manifested as signs of faith...Perseverance

Introduction - Have you ever worked with something or on something and simply got tired of it? We contemplate changing or quitting, especially if that which we are working on is not working out. And most of the time, we find out later that if we had stuck with it for a little while longer, we would have seen fruit from our labor.

Explanation - Read I Corinthians 15:58 - "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord." (NKJV) The word of God encourages us to persevere in this Christian journey. We are to give our all unto service to the Lord even when it seems we are not making any progress.

Application - “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” (Galatians 6:9, NKJV )

Conclusion - Rewards are awaiting us who labor and don’t give up. 1 Corinthians 3:8 says, "Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor." (NKJV)

Christian attributes manifested as signs of faith...Spiritual Growth

Introduction - Has anyone ever told you to grow up or stop acting childish? What were they saying? Basically they were implying that your maturity level is such that being around you has become frustrating and a bit irritating. Patience sometimes runs thin when a person is not progressing in maturity as we know they should.

Explanation - Read 2 Peter 1:8 - "For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." (NKJV) It is the Lord’s desire that we grow up, especially in a spiritual nature. As we mature through the study of God’s word and the discovery of what He has given us, we become a more vital part of the Body of Christ.

Application - When we grow up, we see events in our lives from God’s viewpoint. We see troubles and trials as opportunities to increase our faith.

Conclusion - Maturity leads to stability in our lives. Ephesians 4:14 reads, "That we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting." (NKJV)

Christian attributes manifested as signs of faith...Fruitfulness

Introduction - If we plant apple trees, we expect apples. The more apples that are produced, the happier we are. So when the Lord plants a seed of faith in our hearts, He expects our faith to produce something.

Explanation - Read John 15:1-6 - "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 'I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.'' (NKJV) Our lifestyle should be one of fruitfulness. The more fruit we produce, the happier the Lord becomes.

Application - What type of fruit does the Lord expect? He expects fruit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Any other fruit is of the flesh and rotten to the core.

Conclusion - The production of good fruit only happens when we walk in the Spirit being controlled by God. Galatians 5:16 says, "I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."

Christian Attributes Manifested Towards Other Christians...Fellowship

Introduction - No matter how hard we try, it is extremely difficult to live alone. It is practically impossible to lead a Christian life without communing and sharing with other Christians.

Explanation - Read Acts 2:42 - "And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers." (NKJV) Because we become partners with Jesus Christ and all other believers, it is our spiritual duty to stimulate one another to righteousness and obedience.

Application - Watching a T.V. evangelist is not the same as fellowship. There are spiritual needs that all Christians require that can only be obtained through true Christian fellowship.

Conclusion - Fellowship is a commandment of God. Hebrews 10:24,25 says, "And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching." We don’t want to share in our neighbor's problems.

Explanation - Read Galatians 6:1,2 - "Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." As children of God, our brothers’ and sisters’ problems become our problems. And because of our love for our brothers and sisters, we put forth our best effort to bear their burdens.

Application - Let us who are spiritual not turn our backs on those who have fallen or in trouble. If we don’t help, who will? The devil rejoices when he sees our poor attitude saying, “It’s not my problem.”

Conclusion - There are benefits to carrying our brother's burdens. James 5:20 says, "Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover a multitude of sins." (NIV)

Christian attributes manifested towards the world...Love towards enemy

Introduction - Naturally, if someone does us wrong, we seek revenge. It is extremely difficult to let something slide. We make our list and check it twice.

Explanation - Read Matthew 5:44 - "But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." When was the last time you blessed someone who cursed you or did good to someone who spread a lot of lies about you? Have you ever gotten down on your knees and prayed for the person who used and abused you?

Application - Through the Holy Spirit, we are able to love our enemies. Romans 5:5 says that the love of God has been poured in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Conclusion - God would not ask us to do something we are not equipped to do. Gal 5:22 says, "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness…" (NIV) If we walk in the Holy Spirit, who indwells each Christian, we will be able to love as God loved us.

Christian attributes manifested towards the world...Work

Introduction - The word “work” is like a curse word to some people. They desire to improve their lifestyles and obtain material goods, but they do not want to lift a finger and work. Working is the best thing that can happen to all of us because idle minds and idle hands conceive evil.

Explanation - Read I Thessalonians 4:11,12 - "Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody." (NIV) Believe it or not, it takes work to even live a quiet life and mind our own business. We can easily get caught up in popularity contests and even become busybodies.

Application - The key to not getting into or causing trouble is to work.

Conclusion - Stop being a busy body. Work! "We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat." (II Thessalonians 3:11,12, NIV)

Christian attributes manifested towards the world...Honesty

Introduction - Have you ever heard the phrase, “The devil made me do it?” You usually hear such from those who don't want to own up to their deeds. There is another popular phrase Christians are encouraged to live by. It says, “Tell the truth and shame the devil.”

Explanation Read Romans 12:17 - "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody." (NIV) We are to put forth extra effort to do the right thing, not just in front of church folks but in front of everybody, at all times. Honesty does not come easy. We must work at it.

Application - The devil has deceived many people to think they can lie their way through life.

Conclusion - It is important to God that we are honest. Why? No liars will go to Heaven. "…and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. (Revelation 21:8, NIV)

Christian attributes manifested towards the world...Contentment

Introduction - Keeping up with the Jones is a difficult task sometimes, especially when we don’t have any money or resources. Such a spirit keeps us unhappy and sometimes deep in debt. It does not have to be that way.

Explanation - Read Hebrews 13:5 - "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" (NIV) It is God’s desire that we be happy with what we have. The Lord desires to bless us, but we must let Him do so in His time and in His portion.

Application - As long as we stay in the will of God, He has promised He will “supply all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19, NIV)

Conclusion - The greatest gain a Christian can receive while on earth is the combination of godliness and contentment. (1 Timothy 6:6)

Christian attributes manifested towards the Holy Spirit...Grieve not

Introduction - When we were young and did something disappointing, our parents' hearts were grieved. After all the work they had done to raise us to be respectable human beings, we go off and do something foolish.

Explanation - Read Ephesians 4:30 - "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." (NIV) The Holy Spirit dwells in all true believers. And the Spirit is grieved when Christians refuse to change their old ways of sin to righteous ways of a new life.

Application - It is simple to keep those around us happy by obeying rules and the law. It is just as simple to keep God, the Holy Spirit, happy by obeying God and leaving the consequences to Him.

Conclusion - We say that we love God. Let us show it by keeping His commands. "This is love for God: to obey His commands. And His commands are not burdensome." (1 John 5:3, NIV)

Christian attributes manifested towards the Holy Spirit...Praying In

Introduction - Have you ever gone somewhere for service and the lines were very long? You did not know the purpose of the lines, but you hopped in the shortest line. You made it to the counter to find out you needed to fill out several forms before receiving service. You kick yourself for not going straight to the counter, asking for directions and saving time.

Explanation - Read Jude 20 - "But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit." (NIV) Why is it significant to pray in the Holy Spirit? The reason is that in the life we live on earth, we need divine guidance. Divine guidance comes from our Lord in Heaven. We directly connect to our Lord for instructions through the Holy Spirit.

Application - What a waste it would be to go through life attempting to fulfill God's purpose and plan for our lives without consulting with the Lord. If we don't ask, we will never know. Seek direction through the Holy Spirit. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5,6, NIV)

Conclusion - The Holy Spirit will help us pray for guidance. "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for saints in accordance with God's will." Your stomach filled with food? Your heart filled with sorrow? Your body filled with cholesterol? Whatever it is that fills us, dominates our thoughts, our actions and even our purpose at that moment.

Explanation - Read Ephesians 5:18 - "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit." (NIV) It is God’s desire that we live under the influence of the Holy Spirit by letting the Word control us as we pursue pure lives, confess known sins, die to self, surrender to God’s will, and depend on God’s power in all things.

Application - If you are filled with wine, you eventually become drunk. You no longer have control of your body, mind, and spirit. Drunkenness leads to foolishness. Why not be filled with the Spirit of God? Give control of your mind, body, and spirit to God.

Conclusion - "So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature." (Galatians 5:16, NIV)

Christian attributes manifested towards the Holy Spirit...Walking In…

Introduction - Our attitude or how we feel about a person, place or thing, usually determines our walk in life.

Explanation - Read Galatians 5:16 - "So I say, live or walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature." (NIV) That which is pleasurable to our sinful nature is sometimes displeasing to God. But if we walk in the Holy Spirit, we will say "no" to that which feels good to us right now but will destroy us in the future.

Application - Walking in the Spirit means doing what God desires us to do regardless of the pain or pleasure, and having a positive attitude about doing what is right. It’s about doing the right thing and "leaving the consequences to God."

Conclusion - Our lives will show if we are walking in the Spirit by the fruit we bear. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." (Galatians 5:22-24, NIV)

Christian attributes manifested towards Jesus...Fellowship

Introduction - Sometimes we get tired of being around certain folks. We simply cut them loose. If they come our way, we go the opposite direction to avoid them.

Explanation - Read 1 John 1:3 - "We proclaim to you that we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His son, Jesus Christ." (NIV) We don't want to cut the Lord loose, especially when strong temptations hit us left and right. As soon as we decide to do so, we step outside of God’s will. We no longer have the benefits of provision, protection, companionship, comfort, peace, love, and joy. We no longer have fellowship with Him.

Application - When we cut the Lord loose, we've decided to walk on the dark side. 1 John 1:5 says that “If we say we have fellowship with God and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice truth.”

Conclusion - To step back into fellowship with the Lord and receive His benefits, we simply need to admit our dark side with all sincerity and turn to the light. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9, NIV)

Commitment To God: Christian attributes manifested towards Jesus...Growth

Introduction - Sometimes it’s hard to let go of childish things. We don't want to grow up. Growth brings responsibility. As we grow older, we are expected to mature. And our maturity is reflected by our decisions.

Explanation - Read 2 Peter 3:18 - "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever! Amen." (NIV) It is God’s desire that we lead stable lives. Sometimes we find ourselves tossed back and forth by all forms of doctrines and philosophies. As we increase in knowledge and in favor with our Lord, our souls are anchored that we shall not be moved.

Application - The more we grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, the better off we will be. We will experience the true, abundant life Jesus promised in John 10:10. And more importantly, we will look forward to a home in Heaven with Him.

Conclusion - So, let us strive "until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming." We must be careful whose footsteps we follow. The world offers a number of models to follow. Some models are good people and some are not so good. However, the majority of the models eventually disappoints us and leaves us confused.

Explanation - Read I Peter 2:21-23 - "To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps. 'He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.' When they hurled insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly." (NIV) Jesus left us some solid footsteps to follow. It is difficult, but not impossible to do what Jesus did when He was on earth.

Application - The Person who gave Jesus power to achieve the impossible is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwells in us also and gives us the power to imitate all that Jesus did.

Conclusion - "So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature." (Galatians 5:16, NIV)

Obedience

Introduction - Sometimes it is difficult to obey someone or some law, especially when it is inconvenient. It's difficult to obey the speed limit of 30 MPH on a low-traffic street when you are late for church. We all know what the law says about the speed limit but rationalize breaking the law.

Explanation - Read Matthew 7:21 - "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." (NIV) We may be able to rationalize breaking man's law, but on the day of judgement, the very words that are written in the Bible will judge us. (John 12:48) There will be no arguing or rationalizing.

Application - That is why Jesus left us an example. He was obedient all the way to the cross so that the world would learn and see that He loved the Father and that He did exactly what His Father commanded Him. (John 14:31, NIV)

Conclusion - Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really My disciples." (John 8:31, NIV)

Commitment To God: Christian attributes manifested towards God...Worship

Introduction - When we think of worship, we naturally think of Sunday service. That is one time that we do come together and worship God. What about the rest of the week? Who or what do we worship then? We worship whatever it is we hold at high esteem. It can be material things, self, or others.

Explanation - Read Philippians 2:5-11 - "Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (NIV) It is God’s desire that we hold Jesus Christ at high esteem and that we strive to be just like Him.

Application - God loves us just as we are, but He does not want us to stay that way. He wants us to be just like Jesus. To be like Jesus is to be humble and obedient.

Conclusion - We worship Jesus best by conforming to His image. "For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brothers." (Romans 8:29, NIV)

Christian attributes manifested towards God...Love

Introduction - We use the word “love” so loosely these days. We love food. We love clothes. We love friends. We love school. We love, love, love.

Explanation - Read Matthew 22:36,37- "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'" (NIV) God wants all our love. He wants all our heart, all our soul, and all our mind. And all means all.

Application - The true indication that we love the Lord is not with our lips. “This is love for God: to obey His commands.” (1 John 5:3)

Conclusion - "And He has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother." (1 John 4:21, NIV)

Christian attributes manifested towards God...Godliness

Introduction - When we decide to do something and are determined to see it through, there is nothing that can stop us or change our minds.

Explanation - Read Titus 2:12 - "It teaches us to say no to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age." (NIV) It is the Lord's expectation that we put forth as much energy in living a godly life as we do in achieving any other task we decide to accomplish.

Application – Godliness is a disposition of our attitude towards the will of God. If our attitude is good, we will reverence God and pursue His will with all our heart. If our attitude is bad, we will readily say yes to ungodliness and worldly passions.

Conclusion - Do you want the greatest gain in life or true success? Seek godliness. "But godliness with contentment is great gain." (1 Timothy 6:6, NIV)

Christian attributes manifested towards God...Holiness

Introduction – Do these quotes or something similar sound familiar? "I want to be somebody." "I want to be set apart from the ordinary." "I have purposed in my heart that I'm going to accomplish an extraordinary feat."

Explanation - Read Hebrews 10:10 - "And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ for all." (NIV) God disciplines us that we may participate in His holiness. It is God’s desire to separate us for His calling, to do extraordinary feats according to His plan.

Application - If you truly desire to be somebody, be holy. Let God use you. You will definitely be set apart. Being holy simply means saying "no" to sin and "yes" to God's will.

Conclusion - Pursue holiness so that man may see the Lord in you. "Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord." (Hebrews 12:14, NIV)

Connection With God: Jesus Is...Shepherd

Introduction - Wouldn't it be nice to have someone take care of your every need, someone to provide you food, clothes, and shelter. In addition, they would protect you wherever you go and fight your battles.

Explanation - Read John 10:11,14,15 - "I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. I am the Good Shepherd; I know My sheep and My sheep know me - just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father - and I lay down My life for the sheep." There is no greater love shown towards mankind than the fact that Jesus laid down His life for us all as a shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.

Application - We, the sheep, are expected to listen to the Shepherd’s voice and obey His commandments. Also, the Shepherd hears our voice and will provide our every need.

Conclusion - We shall never be in want with Jesus as Shepherd. Read and meditate upon Psalm 23

Connection With God: Jesus Is...King

Introduction - “Nobody tells me what to do.” I'm sure you've heard this comment before. We might not realize it but we are always subject to some form of authority, whether it is the law of the land, our employers, even the head of our household. We are expected to submit to such authority or suffer the consequence.

Explanation - Read Revelation 3:21 - "To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on His throne." A king sits on a throne. The King of heaven is sitting on the throne right now. His name is Jesus. He is Lord over all who believe in Him. He has all authority and expects us to submit to His will.

Application - To surrender to Jesus who is King, we must set our hearts and minds on things above, things in heaven. We must choose to obey the King. "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God." (Colossians 3:1, NIV)

Conclusion - A surrendered life is a life of holy living. "Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator." (Colossians 3:5-10, NIV)

Connection with God: Jesus Is ... Mediator

Introduction - If you have ever been in a court of law, you know that your chances of winning a case are good if you have a good lawyer. In some cases, even if you are guilty, a good lawyer can possibly save you from jail time. Therefore, you spend time and effort searching for the right representative for your situation. Why? Because you do not want to lose.

Explanation - Read 1 Timothy 2:5 - "For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." Our only way to get in good with God the Father, the Judge, is through Christ Jesus. There is no other way. Christ as our mediator guarantees us favor with God. He is the best representative for all our situations. Even if we are guilty, if we trust in Jesus Christ, we are guaranteed deliverance.

Application - When we do wrong, let us confess it to God the Father through Jesus. Jesus is the only one the Father will listen to. Jesus is our Middle-Man. We must trust Him to get through to the Father, the Judge.

Conclusion - There is no other way to the Father but through Jesus. Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6, NIV) Is your faith in the Holy One, or is your faith in your hookups?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://makingitpersonaldevotion.blogspot.com/2009/08/connection-with-god-jesus-is-mediator.html' title='Connection with God: Jesus Is ... High Priest

Introduction - When we experience difficulties in our lives, we look for someone to share our problems. We don't look for just anyone; we look for someone who can identify with us, someone who feels our pain.

Explanation - Read Hebrews 4:14-16 - "Therefore, since we have a great High Priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have One who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." Jesus understands all our problems, our temptations, and our sufferings. He represents us as High Priest before the Father. It is through Jesus that we receive favor from the Father.

Application - If you can't find anyone to trust and share your heavy burdens, take them to the Lord in prayer. Not only will He hear you, but He will provide a solution.

Conclusion - Give your burdens to the Lord for He cares for you. "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7, NIV)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://makingitpersonaldevotion.blogspot.com/2009/08/connection-with-god-jesus-is-high.html' title='Connection with God: Jesus Is... Head of the Church

Introduction – It is interesting that every action of our body is controlled by the head/brain. Without the head, no other part of the body will work as it should. Therefore, each body part is dependent on an informational feed from the brain before it responds. If your hand touches a hot stove, without the head/brain providing information for you to remove your hand, it will be severely burned.

Explanation - Read Ephesians 1:22,23 - "And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way." God has set Jesus high above all things and has made Him to be head over all things for the Church. Jesus is the brain of the Church.

Application – Every move the Church makes should be the result of information from the Head, Jesus Christ. Without the Head, the Church will be in chaos with no direction as to what to do. If anything destructive enters the Church, without the Head providing information on how to identify and cast out the destruction, the Church will itself be destroyed spiritually.

Conclusion – Christians make up the Church and are made complete in Christ Jesus, the Head. As part of the Body of Christ, we follow where the Head leads us. Just as our physical body will suffer if we don't heed the brain's instructions, so it is spiritually. If we don't heed Christ's instructions, we will certainly suffer. "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." (James 1:22, NIV)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://makingitpersonaldevotion.blogspot.com/2009/07/connection-with-god-jesus-is-head-of.html' title='Connection With God: Jesus Is ... (NIV) God the Father created “the heavens and the earth and all that is in them” according to His own will, through His Son, Jesus Christ, by whom all things continue in existence and in operation.

Application - Jesus, not the Pastor, is the head of the Church which is His body. He is the coming universal King who will reign on the throne of David. Jesus is the first Judge of all who fail to place their trust in Him as Lord and Savior.

Conclusion - Jesus is worthy of all honor, glory, and praise. "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven." Get used to it.” Giving up selfishness and self-centeredness for the betterment of another is a choice. We have the strength we need to deny self for the sake of others.

Explanation - Read 2 Cor. 8:9 - "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich." (NIV) When Christ came to earth, He became poor, a nobody, denying Himself all the riches in glory that we might have eternal life.

Application - After all that Jesus Christ has done for us, can we take a moment and stop thinking about ourselves and think about the interest and needs of others? "If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me." (Luke 9:23, NIV)

Conclusion - We so proudly let the world know that we are followers of Christ. True followers will deny self. "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship." (Romans 12:1, NIV)

Connection With God: Jesus Is...Benevolent

Introduction - “What’s in it for me?” We sometimes say this before doing a good deed. If we are not going to benefit or gain an advantage, we seldom involve ourselves in opportunities of good will.

Explanation - Read Matthew 4:23,24 - "Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. News about Him spread all over Syria, and people brought to Him all who were ill with various diseases, …and He healed them." (NIV) Jesus never grew weary in being benevolent. He never turned away an opportunity to do good. He never asked "what's in it for me." It was all done to the glory of God the Father.

Application - “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” (Galatians 6:9,10, NIV)

Conclusion - "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." In other words, we have suffered enough. The character trait called longsuffering enables us not to lose our last nerve and not to get fed up so easily.

Explanation - Read Luke 22:63-65 - "The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating Him. They blindfolded Him and demanded, 'Prophesy! Who hit You?' And they said many other insulting things to Him." (NIV) Jesus was justified to get fed up and lose His patience but instead, He suffered long to leave us an example.

Application - Anxiety causes us to fall short of longsuffering. It happens in our homes with our spouse and children. It happens in the workplace and in other aspects of our lives. When we become anxious, we hastily say and do foolish things. Imagine the peace that would come over our homes if we were patient with one another and did not allow anyone to get on our "last nerve."

Conclusion - Longsuffering is a part of a victorious lifestyle that gives God glory.

Connection with God: Jesus Is...Meek

Introduction - Many have equated meekness with weakness. They are not the same. Meekness is the ability to bring power or authority under control. Weakness is the abuse of that power.

Explanation - Read Matt 11:28, 29 - "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle/meek and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." (NIV) Jesus was meek and humble in heart in that, while on earth, He had the infinite resources of God at His command but kept such power under control all the way to the cross.

Application - In Christ, we are expected to use the power and authority God has given us. "Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power." (Ephesians 6:10, NIV) Our first inclination when we realize the power we have over our enemies is to seek revenge. But God wants us to use our power with meekness and humility just as Jesus did. "Do not take revenge, my friends…If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink." (Romans 12:19,20, NIV)

Conclusion - "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." (Matthew 5:6, NIV)

Jesus Is... Obedient to the Father

Introduction - We are under the authority or rules of someone or someplace at all times. If you are a child, you live under the rules of your parents. If you are an adult, you live under the rules of the head of the household, the laws of the land, and the policies of your workplace. You are expected to follow the rules or otherwise suffer the consequence. We follow the rules out of love and respect for the authoritative figure and the fact that we will be blessed.

Explanation - Read John 14:30-31 - "I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on Me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what My Father has commanded me." (NIV) Jesus showed His love for the Father by obedience. And as a result "God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name." (Philippians 2:9, NIV)

Application - We say we love God. The true indication of our love for God is not in our words but in obedience.

Conclusion - As a result of our obedience, here's what the Lord promises according to Deuteronomy 28:2-13. "All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:

You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country
The fruit of your womb will be blessed
The crops of your hand and of your livestock will be blessed
Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed
You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out
The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you
The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to
The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity
The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of His bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands
You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none
The Lord will make you the head, not the tail

All such blessings await us all who obey the commandments of the Lord.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://makingitpersonaldevotion.blogspot.com/2009/06/jesus-is-obedient-to-father.html' title='Jesus Is... Resister of Temptation

Introduction - Have you ever heard someone say or have you ever said, "The devil made me do it?" Have you ever knowingly done something outside the will of God because the temptation was just too strong to bear? It is easier to blame others instead of taking on the responsibility of our shortcomings.

Explanation - Read Luke 4:1-2a - "Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil." (NIV) We are all familiar with the temptations of Jesus. Jesus had only one weapon to fight off the temptations of the devil, the Sword of the Holy Spirit which is the Word of God.

Application - We too can be resisters of temptation as Jesus was. "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand under it." To stand under the pressures of temptation in this life, we must have the Word of God written upon our hearts. "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." (Psalm 119:11, NIV)

Conclusion - "Be very careful then, how you live - not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit." (Ephesians 5:15-18, NIV) Through the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, we can overcome all temptation.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://makingitpersonaldevotion.blogspot.com/2009/05/jesus-is-resister-of-temptation.html' title='Jesus Is... A kingdom is usually set up with a large building that represents the castle that is fortified against attacks. There is usually a ruler or lord. The ruler protects, provides for, leads and guides the people of the kingdom. If anyone decides to venture away from the kingdom to explore on their own, they lose the protection, provision, leadership and guidance of the ruler.

Explanation - Read 2 Corinthians 5:21 - "God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. (NIV) God has an established kingdom. His kingdom has been established with one Lord whose name is Jesus. The people of God's kingdom are those who have accepted Jesus as Lord of their lives and have become the righteousness of God. The Lord protects, provides for, leads and guides the people of the kingdom.

Application - If anyone decides to venture away from the kingdom to the darkside called sin, they step outside the will of God and lose the protection, provisions, leadership and guidance of the Lord. "God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all." (1 John 1:5b, NIV) Our Lord will not follow anyone to the darkside if they decide to leave His presence. God’s Spirit that indwells each saint will not forsake you though He be grieved by sinfulness. Hopefully the Spirit will draw you back to the presence of Lord.

Conclusion - Because of the grace of God, if one decides to return from the darkside, God provides a way to get back in His will. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9, NIV) Because one confesses and returns to the Lord does not mean that there won't be consequences for his venture to the darkside. The purpose of God allowing us to experience certain consequences for our sins is to give us something to think about when we consider venturing out to the darkside again.

Connection With God - Jesus Is...The Way

Introduction - For almost everything that pertains to life, there is some sort of guide or instruction manual. The choice is ours to follow the instructions or do things our way. The risk in doing things our way is that we may be short-changing ourselves and not realize it until it's too late. Our best bet is to follow the instruction manual. At least we will know what to expect at the end.

Explanation - Read John 14:6 - Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (NIV) Jesus has explicitly given instructions on the way to get to heaven. He said there is simply one way. Unfortunately, many in the religious realm have devised many ways to get to heaven and many have followed. They don't realize that they are short-changing themselves. I pray that those who are trying to get to heaven outside of Jesus' instruction will come to the light before it is eternally too late.

Application - You've heard the saying, "My way or the highway." Usually with such a statement comes some form of a compromise. There is no compromise with the instructions left us as to how we enter before the presence of God the Father. Compromise would mean that Jesus did not have to die on the cross for our sins. Jesus did not have an option. He was the only way the souls of men could be saved.

Conclusion - "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16, NIV)

Character of God - Jealous

Introduction - Whenever we make a covenant or sign a contract with another person or organization, the other party expects us to be committed to them and them alone. They don’t want to share us with anyone unless it is stated in the contract. We have an exclusive relationship with the other party.

Explanation - Read 2 Corinthians 11:2 - Paul said to the Corinthians, "I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him." (NIV) Paul had a godly jealousy for the saints because he had presented them as pure virgins to one Husband, Jesus Christ. With Paul doing so, the expectation was that the saints would be devoted to Jesus alone and that their hearts would be set on obeying His will.

Application - The devil does not want us to be devoted. He has deceived many into thinking they are missing out if they devote their hearts, souls, minds, and strength to one Person. Paul told the Corinthians, "But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ." (2 Corinthians 11:3, NIV)

Conclusion - Breaking our covenant with God is like committing adultery. "You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit He caused to live in us envies intensely?" (James 4:4,5, NIV) Reconcile with God through the blood of Jesus. Confess your sins and rededicate yourself life to Jesus.

Character of God - Merciful

Introduction - Have you ever told someone you wanted to get what you deserved? Do you really want what you deserve showered down on you? Have you looked in the mirror and been honest with yourself? You don't want what you deserve? None of us do.

Explanation - Read Luke 18:13 - "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'" When we walk around with our heads in the clouds with an attitude of entitlement, we deceive ourselves. We don't deserve what we receive from the Almighty God. That's God's grace. But God is also merciful, withholding His wrath in hopes that we change. "The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9, NIV)

Application - "It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." (Lamentation 3:22, 23, KJV) If we were to receive what we deserved, we would be consumed by the wrath of God right now. However, we are given a chance to get things right with God every morning we open our eyes.

Conclusion - God is merciful in that He does NOT give us what we deserve. That is the same mercy God desires us to be clothed with and show towards our fellowman. Instead of giving another what they deserve, we should bless them as our heavenly Father has blessed us.

Character of God - Faithful

Introduction - “I promise to do it tomorrow.” Have you heard such before only to be disappointed when tomorrow becomes today? Wouldn’t it be nice if a promise that is made is a promise kept all the time.

Explanation - Read 1 Corinthians 1:9 - "God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful." (NIV) God has made many promises in His word, promises that are unchangeable. He has kept, is keeping, and will keep all that He has promised.

Application - It is God’s desire that we stand on His promises and trust Him. If we do not consider God faithful, we will never see His awesome power manifested in our lives.

Conclusion - "And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19, NIV) Do you believe this promise? It is the Lord's desire that we hold Him to His promise. Trust in Him. HE IS FAITHFUL.

Character of God - Gracious

Introduction - Wouldn’t it be wonderful to receive an inheritance or special gift out of the blue even though we did nothing to deserve it? It takes a very special person to be so gracious towards another.

Explanation - Read Psalms 103:8 - "The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love." (NIV) Even though we have done nothing to deserve God’s grace, He poured it out upon us because of His love for us.

Application - We should likewise show grace even towards undeserving souls around us. And just as God has impacted our lives through His grace, we too can impact many lives by being less selfish and more gracious.

Conclusion - God is rich in grace and has shared it with us. "But because of His GREAT love for us, God, Who is RICH in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the INCOMPARABLE RICHES of His grace, expressed in His KINDNESS to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God." (Ephesians 2:4-8, NIV) We are to do the same. "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works (be gracious), which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10, NIV)

Character of God - Good

Introduction - When we were young, one command that we all were probably told is to be good. We tried our best to meet the expectations of our moms and dads. We understood that we represented them in the public and did not want to bring shame upon them. However, sometimes we just didn't feel like being good. So we stepped into the world of badness for a moment. Unfortunately, such a decision has devastated many family relationships.

Explanation - Read Psalm 100:5 -"For the Lord is good and His love endures forever" (NIV) The goodness of God is an "all the time" character trait. We've heard the phrase "God is good all the time. And all the time, God is good." That is so true. Isn't it wonderful that our Lord does not change with the shadows and decide to do bad. We can rely on the goodness of the Lord.

Application - The expectation of the Lord is that we be just as good as He is. But the difference between the command from our earthly parents and God is that God has equipped us to be good all the time. He has endowed us with the Holy Spirit. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." (Galatians 5:22, 23, NIV) If we walk in the Spirit, our flesh will not overtake us to lead us to "badness." Instead, we will do good.

Conclusion - Therefore, just as the Lord desires us to be holy as He is holy, He also desires us to be good as He is good. "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness…" (2 Peter 1:5, NIV)

Character of God - Holy

Introduction - Have you ever tried to go a day or maybe just an hour doing what others desire rather than fulfilling your own desires? In many cases we don’t have a choice, especially if we fall under another’s authority. In the workplace, you have to put the desires of your employer before yours. At school, you have to put the desire of the instructors before yours. Wherever you go and are under the authority of another, you are at that person’s mercy and are compelled to set aside your own desires for the desires of the one whose authority you are under.

Explanation - Read Revelation 4:8 - "…And they do not rest day or night, saying: 'Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!" (NKJV) God is holy and it is His desire that we be holy. Holiness is as simple as saying no to sin and saying yes to the will of God.

Application - Colossians 3:12 says, "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;" (NKJV) We are holy and loved by the Father. We are also under His authority. Why don't we put forth the effort to show compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience as we would if we were under secular authority?

Conclusion - Therefore my dearly beloved, be holy as God is holy.

Character of God - All Present (Omnipresent)

Introduction - Sometimes we feel alone and filled with fear and anxiety as we face the trials and struggles of daily living. We search for comfort, but there is none. We reach for a hand to grab, but there is no hand extended. But God…

Explanation - Read Psalms 23:4 - "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me" (NIV) In this life, we will have ups and downs, highs and lows. But we should not fret because the Lord will be with us to comfort us, to hold our hand, and to guide us through the storms of life.

Application - What an awesome thought to know that God is with us wherever we go. In the best of times, God is with us. In the worse of times, God is with us. Never will He leave us or forsake us.

Conclusion - Our Lord is not just present in the sanctuary, He is in our homes. He is in the workplace. He is with us on the way to work. He is with our children. "So we say with confidence, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" (Hebrew 13:6)

Character of God - All Powerful (Omnipotent)

Introduction - If the truth be told, we all desire power of some form or fashion in our lives. It could be at home, in the workplace, or even in church. Power gives the sense of authority and control.

Explanation - Read John 19:10,11 - "'Do you refuse to speak to me?' Pilate said. 'Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?' And Jesus answered, 'You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.'" (NIV) Pilate did not realize, and many today do not realize, that it is the all-powerful God who gives others power to have authority to say and do certain things in this life.

Application - Because so many have forgotten where their power and authority comes from, our Lord has and will humble them. In Acts 12:21-23, "On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. They shouted, 'This is the voice of a god, not of a man.' Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died." (NIV)

Conclusion - "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." (Luke 12:48b, NIV) The power and authority given from the omnipotent God comes with responsibility. Allow God to endow the power and authority He desires of you and use it with godly wisdom.

Character of God - All Knowing (Omniscient)

Introduction - There are times when we do certain things with the wrong intent ruling our hearts. Though on the outside, we say and act one way; on the inside, we think differently. We figure we have gotten away with something since no one can tell the difference.

Explanation - Read Jeremiah 17:9,10 -"The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 'I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.'" (NIV) Though we may successfully deceive others and sometimes ourselves, we can never deceive the all-knowing God. God constantly examines the intent of the heart and rewards accordingly.

Application - What shall we do? Ask the Lord, "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." (Psalm 139:23,24, NIV)

Conclusion - Let us stop pretending. It is all in vain. God is not mocked. If our intent is not according to God's will and purpose, we will not be rewarded for what we do. "If any man builds on this foundation [Jesus Christ] using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward." We buy things but still feel empty. We fill our lives with many activities but still are bored. We surround ourselves with the coolest of friends, but loneliness rules our hearts. Why can't we be happy and satisfied?

Explanation - Read Ecclesiastes 3:11b -"He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; (NIV) Our hearts and minds are so deep and unending that it is virtually impossible to fill it with the "stuff" of this world and be satisfied. It's sort of like living off junk food. After eating junk food, you are not satisfied but still hungry because there was no substance in the food to fill the body.

Application - And so it is with our hearts. If we are to fill our hearts and be truly satisfied, we are going to have to feed our hearts with something of substance. The people of faith mentioned in Hebrews 11 had the right idea. "All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. People who say such things show they are looking for a country of their own. If they were thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them." (Hebrews 11:13-16, NIV) These people's hearts were not set on the things of this world because they knew "stuff" would not fill their eternal desires. Therefore, they set their hearts on a heavenly home promised to those who believed.

Conclusion - God is an eternal God, and it is His desire that the eternity which has been placed in our hearts be satisfied. The key to filling that eternal void is not filling it with "stuff." "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." (2 Cor 4:18, Colossians 3:1,2, NIV)

Character of God - Unsearchable

Introduction - We sometimes see tragedy happen all around us and wonder why God allows it. We seek the great theologians of our time for answers. We search the scripture. We search our own hearts trying to figure out God.

Explanation - Read Isaiah 55:8,9 - "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts." Though we may search out the reason why God allows certain things to happen or have mercy on certain people, the limitation of minds prevents definite conclusions. We can only guess based on our earthly wisdom as compared to God's infinite and eternal wisdom.

Application - The fact of the matter is that some things we will never understand. Even if we ask of God's wisdom, He will provide based on our limited capacity to grasp, understand and handle.

Conclusion - Though you might be going through a living hell right now and are ready to throw in the towel, don't do it! Ask God to open the eyes of your heart that you can see His infinite wisdom in all your troubles and pain. That is the only way that you will be able to "Consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of may kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (James 1:2-4, NIV).

Character of God - Invisible

Introduction - It is difficult sometimes to trust what we cannot see. If we have a pain in our shoulder and take ibuprofen to reduce the pain, we sometimes wonder how the medicine that goes into our mouth, goes through our stomach, enters our bloodstream and reaches the area in our shoulder to relieve the pain. But because we have tried the medicine and experienced the relief, we trust the medicine even though we don't see how it works. And so it is with God.

Explanation - Read I Timothy 1:17 - "Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen" (NKJV) We who are children of God are a part of a kingdom where God is King, eternal, and invisible. He expects us to worship Him in spirit and in truth.

Application - How do we worship an unseen God? We must trust God. We must taste the faithfulness of God at least once before we fully trust Him. It's like medicine. Until you take the first dosage of medicine and experience relief, you won't fully trust claims on the label of the medicine.

Conclusion - You can start trying out the faithfulness of God by "Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7, NKJV) Why continue carrying burdens that are daily wearing you down? Jesus said, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28, NKJV) Though you don't see how God will relieve you of the burdens, trust Him as you would medicine though you can't see how it works in your body.

Character of God - Love

Introduction - Have you ever been crossed by someone and found it difficult to be around them? Even the best of us don't care too much about a back-stabbing, gossiping, whispering associate. Human nature will tell us to seek revenge, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

Explanation - Read Matthew 5:43,44 - "You have heard it was said, 'you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you." (NKJV) As we grow from one level of faith to another, we will reach that point where we can easily follow this commandment of our Lord. Right now, it might take a miracle.

Application - The key to our loving our enemies is spiritual maturity, and maturity only comes through hard work. As Peter said, "Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 1:5-8, NKJV) As we spiritually mature, we will learn to love as Jesus loved us and gave His life for us though we are wretched sinners.

Conclusion - Matthew 5:48 says, "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." (NIV) The word perfect means "be mature." God wants us to love just as He loves. That is the reason why "God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us." (Romans 5:5, NIV)

Character of God - Light

Introduction - One of the purposes of light is to expose darkness. Those things that were once well hidden are now out in the open for all to see. Involuntary exposure to light can cause embarrassment and humiliation. So, why is there no shame today as men and women do dark deeds in broad daylight? Is it because the light of Christians is no longer shining bright?

Explanation - Read John 3:19-21 - "And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done of God."

Application - God left His light with us, His gospel. We are the light of the world. Because those practicing evil hate the light, do we put our lights under a shade for fear of persecution and ridicule? We may be the only truth, the gospel, that any person will see. If the person is not certain what he sees because of the dimness of the light, he will certainly not follow God.

Conclusion - God expects us as Christians to let our lights shine that our deeds may be clearly seen and God may be glorified in heaven.

Getting To Know God - Making It Personal-Read 1st

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. - Joshua 1:8

God wants a personal relationship with each of us.
